The carbon powder that is in pulp towers can clog easily and is very dusty. Drexelbrook’s anti-clogging system resists to this phenomenon and prevents repeat maintenance that is frequent in this type of process.

Drexelbrook’s level probe, which comes with a 4-20 mA Switch output, responds exceptionally well in very high magnetic fields as found in plants that produce aluminum. Also, alumina is an isolating powder and not very conductive. The Drexelbrook probe is provided with a ‘’High Sensitivity’’ mode to be able to work in isolating materials such as alumina. It’s advantage is the system’s long life which is very long, namely twenty years or longer.

Williamson’s infrared pyrometer is specifically designed for this type of application. Aluminum changes emissivity constantly with température changes. Williamson compensates for these changes. The way it reads température by infrared is unique. It’s advantage is to be able to read the temperature at more or less 1 degree celsius. A better process control and a better product all at a lower energy cost.

Dimetix Laser

At the finish, aluminum ingots became solid and color mast. It is then very easy to measure their heights with a no contact Dimetix laser to verify their sizes before shipping. The laser is useful in this application because the ingots are generally still very hot.

During the preparation of the carbon recipe mixer, the Hardy scale is very useful to measure the weight of the different powder components used in the recipe. Its anti-vibration system allows it to accelerate this mixture with precision and increase the pace of production.

When the anodes are molded and transported in suspension on a conveyor, a section of the conveyor is transformed into balance to ensure quality weight control of the anodes delivered to production. The Hardy scale is perfectly adapted to read the weight without the vibrations generated by the suspended transport of the anodes and thus to give the exact value of the anode weight.

This application is particularly difficult because at the output of the cooler, there is a lot of water. Water vapor is the greatest enemy of infrared. It is perceived as an insurmountable wall by the pyrometer. Williamson has a unique model with filter to pass through this steam and give a real temperature.

Protection of hot liquid spills on the floor
When transferring liquid aluminum for transport in different sections of the plant, it is important to protect the operating personnel and trucks against accidental spills of hot liquid aluminum. Williamson has an infrared pyrometer for this type of application that is called “Hot Spot Detection”. This is a pyrometer with a large extended view that can read the highest temperature that is in its vision. This is an essential element for security.

Anodes temperature reading.
At the exit of the oven, it is important to know the temperature of the carbon anodes. Williamson perfectly meets this application, even if the anodes are of a very dark black color. Williamson has developed a technology which calibrates the instrument between each temperature readings at 60 times per second. This technology allows to stabilize the pyrometer, even if the anode surface is very dark.
